About the Series
From creator Amanda Parris, Revenge of the Black Best Friend is a six episode satirical comedy series that follows Dr. Toni Shakur, a woman with a mission. Whether it is through her award-winning daytime talk show or her best-selling books, her sold out retreats or her keynote speeches she has a consistent message for the film and television industry: the time for creating one-dimensional, stereotyped Black characters has come and gone. According to Toni, Black actors are no longer available to provide your comic relief, deliver cool points to your bland lead, or check off diversity boxes for your performative quotas.
Throughout this series, we see Dr. Toni Shakur delivering her message by any means necessary: infomercials, talk show episodes, pitches to networks and guest appearances on reality TV. And in each episode she goes straight into battle against a different stereotype: The Sassy Black Girl, The Supportive Sidekick, The One Who Dies First and The Thug. Dr. Shakur is the guru Black actors have been waiting for and the warrior the industry has long feared.
Okay, so that’s Dr. Toni Shakur in the eyes of Dr. Toni Shakur. But we all know what happens when someone turns a social justice issue into a pedestal. When you’ve been sitting long enough on that high horse, there’s only one direction to go: down. In Revenge of the Black Best Friend, we consider the question: what happens when your social justice mission becomes your (very profitable) brand?
